DESCRIPTION:
Join us for a fascinating evening on March 20th from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Carnegie Library Center, as the Shelby County Historical Society teams up with the Shelby County Public Library to honor the remarkable life of Julia Ann Hieronymus Tevis. Led by the insightful Cheryl Van Stockum, this presentation will delve into the inspiring story of Julia, who founded the Science Hill Female Academy in 1825 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. This year marks a significant milestone—the 200th anniversary of this pioneering institution that broke barriers for girls at the time. At Science Hill, young women ages 12 to 16 were empowered to explore subjects like mathematics and science, traditionally reserved for boys in elite educational settings. This presentation will uncover the rich heritage of the academy and celebrate the lasting legacy that continues to thrive today through the efforts of Wakefield-Scearce Galleries. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about an incredible woman who transformed education for girls and made history in the process!
