Our Mission

Vision

The library is the common thread connecting the community through helpful information. Our doors open each day as our staff cultivates collaboration in a creative atmosphere. Lifelong learning begins within these walls as minds are expanded and opportunities are developed.

Mission

The Shelby County Public Library shall provide services, programs, and materials to enrich people’s lives while fostering a love of reading, providing access to information, and encouraging lifelong learning.

Values

Shelby County Public Library is committed to growing with our community and welcomes change as necessary for success. We frequently reimagine our space to uncover how best to serve our patrons.

  • We invest in the community we serve by developing minds.
  • We operate through the highest level of service, technology, and collaboration.
  • We grow with our patrons and welcome fluidity.
  • We celebrate successes, recognizing the achievements of patrons and colleagues alike.

(Values inspired by: Roedel Companies, “Culture,” 2019)

Library Philosophy

The Shelby County Public Library shall provide modern library service to the county's residents and other qualified borrowers consistent with the traditional role of libraries in America while striving to encompass more recent trends in diversified print and non-print materials, information retrieval, automated technology, and library programming. The Library will uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and access to information as declared in the Library Bill of Rights and the Library Code of Ethics and adopted by the American Library Association.
