Double Jeopardy by Bob Hill
In America, it is unequivocally illegal to prosecute a person for the same crime, regardless of the circumstances. This law is designed to protect the innocent from unjust harassment and persecution, but all too often, it also serves to shield the guilty from accountability.
The evidence against southern businessman Mel Ignatow was overwhelmingly compelling—virtually sealing his fate for the brutal sex torture and murder of his former girlfriend, Brenda Schaefer, in 1988. There was a clear motive, undeniable forensic evidence, and even testimony from an eyewitness who documented the horrific crime with photographs. Yet, in a Kentucky courtroom, a combination of frustration, ignorance, incompetence, and sheer luck twisted this seemingly straightforward case into a convoluted mess, ensnaring the very essence of American justice in a crisis that could linger indefinitely.
